A first season does not have to mean a travel team
If your child wants to try volleyball, start with the experience they want: a short skills class, a recreational team, or regular developmental training. A competitive club roster is not required for the beginner programs below.
This guide covers published options around Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Morrisville, Cary, and Apex as checked September 9, 2026. We separate upcoming classes from seasons already underway and programs to watch next year. Registration availability can change.
Triangle Youth Volleyball Program — Morrisville
For elementary- and middle-school beginners, including children with some recreational experience. Players are grouped by ability. Classes are at 121 Competition Center Drive, Morrisville; enroll through Triangle’s Oasys program page.
Single classes are listed at $50 and the six-week series at $230, before the provider’s stated convenience fee. These are instructional programs, separate from travel-team tryouts.

NC Volleyball Academy Youth Academy — Durham
Ages 7–14, with fundamentals and small-group play. The facility is at 4234 Surles Court, Suite 300, Durham. Online enrollment is required; walk-ins are not accepted.
Choose a Friday or Sunday series. Each six-class series is listed at $210, or $380 for both. Notice the September and Thanksgiving-week gaps: these are the actual listed class dates, not every Friday or Sunday.

YMCA volleyball — choose the branch, then the session
The YMCA’s recreational sports philosophy includes no tryouts or cuts and playing time for registered participants. Its volleyball page lists ages 7–14 overall, with U divisions on individual programs; use the registration age chart to place your child.
Branch schedules differ. Start times, prices, and available spaces need the branch registration lookup. Some fall leagues are already underway; ask about late openings instead of assuming you can still join.
| Branch | Published 2026 season |
|---|---|
| Chapel Hill–Carrboro | U11: Tue/Thu Oct 6–Dec 1 U14: Thu Oct 8–Dec 3 Exact start times: confirm at registration. |
| Kerr Family | U8–U11 and U12–U15 clinics in November–December. Confirm exact dates: the published end date conflicts with its stated Sunday schedule. |
| Alexander Family | Saturday fall clinic/league runs Aug 15–Oct 10; already underway. |
| Kraft Family | Fall programs run August–Oct 3; already underway. |
| Northwest Cary / Taylor Family | Fall programs run Aug 8–Oct 3; already underway. |
Southern Sand Super Juniors — Apex
A beach-volleyball introduction for boys and girls ages 8–15 with little or no experience. Sessions meet once a week for 90 minutes at Southern Sand, 6175 Old Jenks Road, Apex.
The October program lists $105 per four-class option at the time of checking, with a $10 increase September 22. No additional membership is required. The provider may combine groups when enrollment is low.

|---|---|

| Monday option | Oct 5, 12, 19, 26 5–6:30 PM |
| Wednesday option | Oct 7, 14, 21, 28 5–6:30 PM |
Try one evening: Southern Sand open house
Friday, September 25, 2026, 6–7:30 PM in Apex. The $10 open house includes instruction and games, welcomes different experience levels, and gives parents a chance to learn about programs.
Registration closes at noon that day. The event does not state a minimum age, so confirm suitability for a younger child before signing up.
Recreation leagues: Apex now, other towns to watch
Apex offers girls’ divisions for ages 10–12, 13–14, and 15–17. Fall 2026 began in August and continues through October, with two meetings a week. Ask about late openings or the next season; exact times depend on the team. Player assessments help form teams, so do not assume every recreation program has the same enrollment process.
Cary’s 2026 girls’ volleyball season was a summer program for ages 10–18 and has finished. Wake Forest’s summer league, run with Cap City for girls ages 9–16, has also finished. They are worth watching for future announcements, but we have not verified new season dates.
| Town | Status as of September 9 |
|---|---|
| Apex Parks | Fall season underway through October. Contact the program about openings or the next registration window. |
| Cary Parks | Summer program completed. Next-season dates not verified. |
| Wake Forest Parks / Cap City | Summer program completed. Next-season dates not verified. |
Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill program finders
Raleigh Parks’ class finder and center-specific open-play schedules are useful places to search. We did not verify a current citywide youth volleyball league. Check the age rules and whether a session includes coaching; open play is not automatically a beginner class.
Durham Parks offered a youth beginner/intermediate clinic in summer 2026, and Chapel Hill Parks offered summer middle-school skills labs. Those sessions have passed; their next youth dates were not verified. Chapel Hill’s listed volleyball open gym is for ages 16 and older, so it is not an option for younger children.
i9 Sports — check current Raleigh-area listings
The local i9 page lists volleyball for different skill levels, with no tryouts or drafts and practice before games on the same day. Use its local finder to check the actual volleyball venue, age group, dates, time, and price.
We did not verify a specific upcoming Raleigh-area volleyball session from the accessible listings. Treat this as a program-search option rather than a confirmed dated class.
For middle- and high-school players
NC Academy Choice offers organized fall training and competition for middle- and high-school players: Mondays and Wednesdays, September 14–October 21, 2026, 5:30–7:30 PM, with 12 sessions listed at $380. Confirm grade eligibility and experience fit with the provider; its page has inconsistent grade descriptions.
School volleyball is another route, but it has its own eligibility rules and tryout process. Wake County lists volleyball among its middle-school sports. Check your school’s current athletics page and paperwork rather than treating a school team as open-enrollment recreation.
Choose a manageable first step
For a child who has never played, a short fundamentals class can be a useful first experiment. For a child who wants teammates and a weekly game, compare recreational leagues. For more regular coaching, look at a developmental series. These are ways to narrow the choices, not guarantees that a particular program fits every player.
Before registering, confirm the current session dates, experience expectations, total cost, what to bring, and the missed-session policy. Let your child help choose. You can decide about a larger club commitment after they have had a chance to enjoy the game.
