Tryouts

A calmer start to club tryouts

The dates, questions, and practical details to sort out before your player steps onto the court.

Start with a short list

Pick a few clubs your family could realistically get to for practices. A tryout is one trip; a season is a recurring commitment. Compare the practice location and expected weekly schedule before building your tryout calendar.

Keep a note for each club with its official registration link, contact person, and the questions you still need answered. Our tryout directory can help with discovery; confirm the final details with the club.

Confirm the details that can change

Use the club’s current instructions for your player’s age group. Don’t assume that a teammate’s session or last season’s requirements apply.

  • Which age group and session should your player register for?
  • Are there multiple required tryout dates or callbacks?
  • What registration, membership, or paperwork is required?
  • What time is check-in, and what equipment should players bring?
  • How are offers communicated, and when does the family need to respond?

Ask about the season, too

Before accepting an offer, ask for the expected practice schedule, travel commitments, total fees, and what those fees include. Put the information beside your family calendar so you can assess the commitment together.

Keep preparation focused

Ask your player what would help them feel more comfortable: understanding the tryout format, getting more touches, or working on one specific skill. If you choose a private lesson, share that goal with the coach before the session. A lesson is a chance to learn; it cannot guarantee a roster spot.
